Malware Definition

What is Malware?

Malware, also known as malicious software, is a malicious piece of code written to damage devices and extract information via trojans, viruses, spyware and ransomware.

Malware is created with the goal of taking your money or personal information. Whilst malware isn’t capable of damaging or breaking your machine or network (hardware), it can, encrypt, steal or delete your data, it can even edit settings or spy on your every move without your knowledge.

Types of Malware

Trojans

Trojans disguise themselves as a legitimate piece of software, or, a piece of malware is hidden within legitimate software – both tend to go unnoticed until their machines are infected.

Virus

Usually coming in the form of an executable file (.exe), viruses infect your machine and are capable of spreading autonomously, damaging your operating system and wiping or corrupting files.

Spyware

Spyware is a piece of malware designed to spy on you. Hiding in the background, spyware can record and track every mouse click, keystroke and anything you do online – putting your passwords, financial information and browsing history at risk.

Ransomware

This type of malware will lock down your computer and or files, threatening to delete files unless a ransom is paid.

Worms

Worms infect an entire network infrastructure of devices, either locally or via the internet. Once one machine has been infected, it can spread and will consecutively infect machines until rectified.

Adware

Whilst intrusive ads are often obvious, by simply clicking on them, malware can be prompted and installed on your machine without you even knowing.

Botnets

Botnets are a network of infected computers or devices that unite and work together, all under the influence and control of one machine in the hands of an attacker.
