As part of the Department for Education’s (DfE) Narrowing the Digital Divide initiative, over £45 million has been allocated to improve digital infrastructure in schools.
This funding supports two targeted improvements:
- £25 million to upgrade wireless networks through the ongoing Connect the Classroom programme
- An additional £20 million to help selected schools upgrade their fibre connectivity
Together, these programmes aim to ensure every learner can benefit from fast, secure, and reliable internet, the foundation of modern teaching, digital inclusion, and improved educational outcomes.
Why Is This Funding Being Offered?
The government’s “Technology in Schools Survey 2022 to 2023” revealed that only 63% of schools report having a fully functional Wi-Fi signal across their entire site. Without robust connectivity, schools struggle to fully integrate digital learning tools, access cloud platforms, or support hybrid teaching methods.
This latest wave of investment is designed to close that gap, especially in areas where digital standards fall below national expectations, ensuring no pupil is left behind due to outdated infrastructure.
What Is Connect the Classroom?
Launched in 2021, Connect the Classroom is a DfE-funded programme focused on improving wireless networks in schools. It helps eligible schools upgrade:
- Wireless access points to meet the latest Wi-Fi standards
- Network switches to support growing digital demands
- Full-site Wi-Fi coverage
- Central network management capabilities
- Security systems to prevent unauthorised access

What About the Fibre Upgrade Funding?
Alongside Connect the Classroom, the DfE has announced an additional £20 million to support fibre infrastructure upgrades. This is targeted at Schools that fall below minimum connectivity thresholds and need support improving their broadband capacity.

What Happens Next?
